Tōku Ora‘anga Kōpapa
The development of health literacy during adolescence is crucial for empowering young people to make choices that support healthy behaviours. Access to personal data can support adolescents to explore and develop evidence-based understanding of their own health.
As part of the Pacific Health for Health Literacy Project, Te Marae Ora in partnership with the Ministry of Education has tracked anthropometric and metabolic health indicators of junior secondary school students since 2016. The My Health Profile booklet was developed in 2016 in response to the need for health data collection in schools to be accompanied by quality access to records for students.
My Health Profile was reviewed as part of the regular education resource review cycle in 2023 via a series of focus groups involving health and education professionals. Tōku Ora‘anga Kōpapa was developed in response to recommendations that the resource should continue to include concepts related to pitoenua, body systems and composition, heart health, diabetes, and risks associated with substance abuse.
New additions include sections on vaping, physical activity and mental health. Education leaders requested more explicit curriculum links and a new resource suitable for primary school-age students. These changes support coherence and progression across the school curriculum, enhancing usability.
This poster describes how the new booklet was co-designed with teachers, education leaders and health professionals.
