Statistical Literacy Toolkit

Welcome to the Oraanga Tūmanava Statistical Literacy Toolkit!

The toolkit consists of a series of learning and development modules designed to meet the needs of health and education professionals working with monitoring and evaluation data. 

The courses are designed in bundles, moving from the basics through to advanced data analysis.

Education and Health Professionals in the Cook Islands can get additional support from either the Ministry of Education data team or Te Marae Ora’s Health Intelligence team.  

‘Uri: Introducing Software
Your journey begins! Plant the seed of knowledge with an introduction to software. This bundle walks you through how to use SharePoint and Excel. This software will be essential for working with data. Whether you’re just starting out or need a refresher, these courses will help you establish strong roots in the fundamentals.

Introduction to SharePoint

Familiarize yourself with how to access and navigate SharePoint. Learn how to create and use folders and files, sync SharePoint across multiple devices, and collaborate with others to work in SharePoint.

Excel Spreadsheet Icon

Introduction to Excel
Get started with Microsoft Excel, your best friend in data analysis. This course will teach you how to identify key parts of an Excel worksheet and how to utilize them. We’ll also explore how to enter, filter, and sort data, before looking into analyzing data using basic formulas.

Kao: Basic Data Exploration
Welcome, budding statisticians. This bundle focuses on expanding your data analysis skills. We will explore types of data, key research methods, descriptive statistics, and graphs. It’s the perfect next step for nurturing growth in data analysis.

Research Methods and Data Handling
We jump into data exploration with an overview of different types of data before diving into some common biases. Not sure how to go about organizing your research and collecting data? Different types of quantitative research methods round off this course.

When analyzing data, we usually begin here – with an exploration of central tendency statistics and measures of spread. Explore the different ways you can summarize your data and how to easily perform this in Excel.

Get to grips with types of graphs and charts as we explore how to present your data visually. Learn how to create different types of data tables, charts, and graphs in Excel along with the pros and cons of each.

Pu‘era: Using Samples to Understand Populations

Now, it’s time to see your learning blossom. This bundle is all about deepening your expertise and branching out into more complex topics. In these courses, we explore tests to show that your findings are significant.

Inferential Statistics: Part One
In this course, we unpack the different elements of a hypothesis test, from significance levels to p-values. You’ll start to understand how to develop a hypothesis based on your research question and the steps needed to perform a statistical test.

Inferential Statistics: Part Two
Here, we explore inferential statistics further and begin to unpack how to select and use an appropriate statistical tests to answer your research question. In this course, we’ll explore different types of statistical tests and show you how to carry them out.

You’re ready to apply what you’ve learned and enjoy the fruits of your labor! If you’d like to learn more, this bundle delves into key concepts like research ethics and tackle the analysis of more complex data types. These courses take you another step deeper into the world of data.
