Case Study: Tereora College

Tereora College is the only senior secondary school on Rarotonga and the largest school in the Cook Islands, serving students from Years 9-13. As one of the original PSHLP schools, Tereora College has played a key role in the programme’s development, informing the progression of PSHLP into Oraanga Tūmanava, providing valuable insights into senior secondary teaching, learning, and leadership.

Impact highlights

PSHLP started as a truly cross-curricula programme in Year 9 traversing Science, Health & P.E., and Social Studies. Many teachers were new to this approach and it was an excellent learning experience for both staff and students. There were many insights from students with regard to how their understanding of NCDs was really enhanced by examining content in different subjects through different lenses.

Being able to learn all about NCDs in three of our subjects at the same time has given me heaps of knowledge about it! I loved getting my own health results, too. I’ve been telling my friends and family about it and what we can do to try and make it better and for the country to be healthier.

- Student

Students were invested, as many of their own family members were dealing with the burden of having NCDs. Students communicated openly about this in class, exchanging experiences. Metabolic health tests along with explaining results in Health class gave the students further knowledge to reinforce their learning.
